Irene Harold

October 2, 1920 — November 2, 2013

I rene M. Harold, 93 of Sabetha entered into eternal rest on Saturday, November 2, 2013 at the Sabetha Community Hospital.

She was born on October 2, 1920 on a farm north of Berwick, Kansas, the oldest daughter of Harry Alfred Moore and Sophronia Ellen (Feek) Moore.  She attended area grade schools and graduated from Sabetha High School in 1938.  She was baptized in the Church of the Brethren and was currently a member of the First United Methodist Church in Sabetha.  After high school she started her working career with Briteweiser and Sewell.  She then worked for Deaver and Wiltz.  Her last employment was with Mid-America Dairymen, retiring in 1982.  While with Briteweiser and Sewell she met and married Melvin D. Harold on February 1, 1942, one month before he left to serve in World War II.

Irene believed in keeping busy once she retired, she and Melvin loved playing bridge, entertaining friends in their home, and traveling across the United States and several foreign countries before retirement.  Branson, Missouri was one of her favorite places to enjoy all kinds of music and searching for collectible home décor and antiques.  She cherished phone calls from family and friends, especially after her eyesight began to fail.  She and Melvin were not blessed with children but thoroughly enjoyed their nieces and nephews and their families.

Irene was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, LaVeta Harwick and nephew, Verle G. Harwick.   She is survived by her loving and caring husband, Melvin; brother-in-law, Gerald “Fuzzy” Harold and his wife, Lucille; sister-in-law, Betty McCallister and her husband, Ferrell; two nieces, Bonnie K. Shenefelt and husband, Les, and Janice Bent and husband, Fred; three nephews, Mark Harold and wife, Shelley, Alan D. McCallister and wife, Sharon and Ron Grote and wife, Jan and their families as well as a host of their relatives and friends.

Memorial services will be Monday, November 11, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Sabetha.  Visitation will be one hour before service at the church.  Inurnment will be in the Sabetha Cemetery.  Memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church sent in care of the Popkess Mortuary, 823 Virginia Sabetha, Kansas.
