Melvin “Sonny” Myron Mowder, 82, passed away on Monday, April 4
th
. He was born on August 23, 1928 in Richardson County, Nebraska to John Lloyd and Hanna E. (Kanel) Mowder.
Sonny graduated from Honeycreek High School, Honeycreek, Nebraska. He was a member of the National Guard and the National Guard Rifle Team, and competed in many tournaments including the national matches in Camp Perry, Ohio. He also earned a Master Classification for High Power Rifle competition.
Sonny worked for the City of Sabetha for nearly 40 years and served as General Superintendent until his retirement in 1989. He and Ed Garber owned and operated G&M Golf Car Sales and Service.
He was married to Dolores “Dee” Jean Yingling, daughter of Ivan and Helen Yingling, on Sunday December 9
th
, 1951 at the First Baptist Church of Sabetha.
Sonny loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter, fisherman, and golfer, and was a member of the Masonic Lodge and the Sabetha Golf Club.
He was preceded in death by his parents John Lloyd Mowder and Hanna E. Mowder, his two sisters Mary Weston and Maxine Vossen, and his wife Dolores “Dee” Jean Mowder.
Surviving are his two sons and their spouses, John and Elaine Mowder of Sabetha, and Jim and Sue Mowder of Topeka; and three grandchildren, Andrew Mowder, Melissa Mowder, and Adam Mowder.
The funeral services will be held Friday, April 8, 2011 at 10:30 am at the Popkess Mortuary in Sabetha. A visitation will be Thursday evening 7-8:30 pm at the funeral home. The interment will be made in the Sabetha Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Sabetha Community Hospital, Apostolic Christian Home, and Northridge Church.
