Wells Eugene Combs was born on February 26, 1932 in Fulton, Georgia the son of Floyd Eugene Combs and Zanna Zelena (Moulton) Combs. He entered the United States Army in 1953 serving in Georgia until 1955. He then entered the Coast Guard in 1957 serving in California until 1961. He then joined the Kansas National Guard in Sabetha serving from 1977 until he retired in 1992. Gene was a member of the Sabetha American Legion John L. Palmer Post #126 and the V.F.W. Post #7285 of Sabetha. Gene enjoyed fishing, hunting and spending time at the casinos.
Gene died on December 8, 2010 at the Sabetha Community Hospital at the age of 78. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Helen Reynolds. He is survived by two sisters, Annie Gutknecht of Sabetha and Carol Simmons of St. Joseph, Missouri; two brothers, John Combs of St. Joseph, Missouri and Robert Combs of Hartford, Tennessee and several nieces and nephews.
Gene’s body was donated to the Creighton University Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 18, 2010 at 1:00 p.m. at the Sabetha V.F.W. Post #7285 with a meal. The interment will be made in the Albany Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Sabetha American Legion John L. Palmer Post #126 or the Sabetha V.F.W. Post #7285 sent in care of the Popkess Mortuary in Sabetha.
